1229 eruption (ice cores said 1230)
The fourth largest sulfur release of the last thousand years (23.8 million tonnes of sulfur), found in both Greenland and Antarctic ice and once dated 1230. Guillet et al. 2023 found that the total lunar eclipse of 2 December 1229 was extremely dark, recorded by the Japanese poet Fujiwara no Teika in his diary. Combining that with tree rings and aerosol models, they place the eruption in Northern Hemisphere spring or summer 1229. The volcano itself is still unknown.
What changed for us: the date is now much better than the ice cores alone gave. The source is the open part.
