Can old chronicles of a dim or red Sun find eruptions the ice missed?

After a big eruption the haze dims and reddens the Sun for a year or two; Caldas saw it in Bogota in 1808. If a chronicle's dim-Sun entries reliably follow known eruptions, then dim-Sun entries with no eruption behind them become candidates for eruptions nobody has found.
