Clue from people AD 1490 Chinese (Wanli yehuo bian, about 1606) 📍 Qingyang, Gansu, China

Shen Defu (about 1606): 'stones fell like rain, the large 4-5 hu, the small 2-3 hu; they struck dead several tens of thousands' (2nd month 1490), in a list of portents

Wanli yehuo bian juan 29: 三年二月,陝西慶陽縣隕石如雨,大者四五斛,小者二三斛,擊死人數萬. Written more than a century later, in a list of Hongzhi-era marvels that also has headless babies and a boulder walking downhill. Month differs (2nd, not 3rd); hu is a grain measure of tens of litres (other editions are quoted with jin, about 0.6 kg). In this text 'Shaanxi officials reported' belongs to the entry before (1488: 'Heaven's Gate opened and a million men and horses came down'); the Chinese Wikipedia quotation joins it to the Qingyang entry, which makes the story look like an official report. A second late miscellany (Qiwen leiji zhaichao, per Yau 1994) gives 'more than 10,000 dead; the whole town fled'.
