Pinatubo's Buag eruption, recalibrated: AD 1438 to 1454 (68%), 1426 to 1469 (95%)

Five radiocarbon ages on wood and charcoal tied to the Buag eruptive period of Mount Pinatubo (Newhall et al. 1996, Table 1: 397, 400, 410, 460 and 470 radiocarbon years) agree with each other (chi-squared 1.7 on 4 degrees of freedom) and combine to 444 +/- 21. Calibrated with IntCal20 (scripts/calib14c.py): 1438 to 1454 at 68 percent, 1426 to 1469 at 95 percent. The charcoal inside the pyroclastic flow alone (460 +/- 30) gives 1428 to 1451 (68 percent), 1413 to 1471 (95 percent); charcoal can be older than the eruption, so the true date leans later. Newhall judged Buag about the size of the 1991 eruption, which is close to the size of the 1453 ice signal.
