Checked the Constantinople omens of May 1453 against the sky and the weather
Found that the ice-core list still has a separate big northern eruption in 1453 (not Kuwae), and that summer 1453 was the coldest in Europe for decades. Read Barbaro's eyewitness diary and Kritovoulos; computed the eclipse; counted modern Istanbul fogs. The Moon omen is an ordinary partial eclipse, the lights fit the Ottoman camp fires, but a whole day of fog in late spring is truly rare. Started downloading the Korean daily annals for 1451 to 1459 to date the eruption.
