No candidate eclipse was securely total at Ugarit; 1223 BC about 5 to 11 percent
scripts/eclipse_local.py with NASA Besselian elements, Ugarit 35.60 N 35.78 E, Delta T uncertainty sigma = 0.8 u^2 s. NASA (2004) Delta T: 1375 BC 98 percent covered at dawn, P(total) 0.09; 1223 BC 93 percent at about 2 pm, P(total) 0.05; 1192 BC 94 percent, P(central) 0.15. Totality at Ugarit needs Delta T 1.4 to 2.7 sigma (1375), 1.7 to 2.8 sigma (1223) or 0.8 to 1.4 sigma (1192) above NASA's value. With the 2016 long-term formula (Stephenson, Morrison and Hohenkerk: -320 + 32.5 u^2): 1375 0.21, 1223 0.11, 1192 0.20. Base rate 1400 to 1180 BC: about 1.2 central eclipses expected at Ugarit; the most likely were the annular eclipses of 13 March 1335 BC (0.45 to 0.57) and 27 September 1261 BC (0.20 to 0.36), never proposed. Mars was within 5 degrees of the Sun only at 1360 BC (annular) and 1223 BC (total); a planet that close can be seen only in totality.
