A great aurora in September 1098, seen in Europe, and perhaps in Kyoto?
Found by accident while searching for the 993 storm. A Kyoto court diary notes strange clouds in the north and two white bands across the sky on the evening of 21 September 1098, the same night a German chronicle records blood-red clouds to the north, followed by auroras across Europe on 25 to 27 September. The Kyoto note gives no colour, so it is a possible but unproven aurora. It is not in the main East Asian aurora catalogue (Yau et al. 1995).
